The average price of frozen (H&G) sockeye exports nudged up 2 cents to $4.94/lb in March 2022. S03T permit prices have increased in recent months as well, with CFEC showing a permit value of $235,400 in April 2022.

Deadline extension to April 30th and the eligibility requirements were relaxed so now Alaska-based businesses that experienced a 30% loss or more in gross annual revenue between 2019 and 2020 are eligible to apply.

Overall, the fishery’s value and market position are very strong. Permit and wholesale prices are the highest they’ve been since the 1990s. While there’s bound to be challenges ahead, we believe this fishery’s future will be even brighter. Here is a glimpse of what we’ve been doing to benefit your business…

March 18th, 6pm AKT - Leading up to the election for board directors, there will be a candidate forum. A great opportunity to hear from the candidates for the three open seats.

Today (March 1) is the last day for BBRSDA members to request paper ballots or opt out from participating in the 2022 Board election. BBRSDA members who do not request a paper ballot will be sent an electronic ballot, directed to the number associated with their S03T permit (unless they have already mailed in their Voter Information card providing updated contact information).

On Thursday Russia invaded Ukraine, leading the U.S. Treasury to announce “unprecedented and expansive sanctions against Russia.” The goal of these sanctions is to impose swift and severe economic costs on the Russian economy and financial system—both immediate and in the long-term.

Bristol Bay salmon processors are in dire need of workers for the upcoming season. More salmon are projected to return to Bristol Bay than ever before, unfortunately, this coincides with an extremely tight labor market. Alaska processors have ramped up efforts to hire domestic workers, but it may not be enough to get a sufficient labor pool for the 2022 season.

BBRSDA hopes the preseason capacity survey will ring the alarm bell of how badly Bristol Bay needs to expand processing capacity in 2022. Alaska’s groundfish fisheries contain many vessels capable of processing and freezing salmon. With improvements to the Port Moller Test Fishery, we have a much better advanced warning system of when big surges of fish are incoming and where they are headed. We encourage all domestic processing companies, existing or otherwise, to strongly consider sending whatever floating processing capacity they might have to Bristol Bay this summer.
