Frozen Sockeye Exports: Prices & Volume Up

U.S. exports of frozen sockeye, much of which is caught and processed in Bristol Bay, have been strong during the first few months of the 2021 sales season. Export volume for July-September 2021 is up 33% over the same period last year, despite 2021 Alaska sockeye harvests only increasing by 17%. The average price of frozen sockeye exports during this period was $3.99/lb., a 19% increase versus the previous year (July-September). The average price of frozen sockeye exports in August and September 2021 was significantly higher than any previous year (back to 2011 for each respective month). See our export data table for more info (LINK).

In general, this is a good sign for Bristol Bay’s salmon industry, suggesting robust demand in export markets. Anecdotal reports indicate demand is also strong in the domestic market as well. However, costs for labor, shipping, and other supply chain inputs have risen substantially this year.
