One of the primary activities of the BBRSDA is funding (actually co-funding, in most cases) projects designed to strengthen our fishery. Across a broad range of disciplines – economic research, quality-improvement, fisheries science and marketing, among others – these programs are where most of our members’ annual 1% assessment goes.
BBRSDA’s participation in approved projects – as well as the responsibilities of funded entities – are defined in contracts with the grantees (ADFG, research institutions, fishermen, service providers, municipalities, etc.).

Port Moller Test Fishery
The primary goal of the Port Moller Test Fishery (PMTF) is to predict run strength of Sockeye Salmon traveling past Port Moller approximately one week prior to their arrival in the various terminal commercial fishing districts of Bristol Bay. PMTF gives Bristol Bay fishermen, processors, and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) time to respond to suspected departures from the preseason forecasts. The Port Moller Test Fishery has two vessels (R/V Ocean Cat and the R/V Miss Leona ) that test fish out from Port Moller. The onboard lab on one of the vessels provides laboratory analysis for stock composition estimates. Read a summary of the 2023 test fishery season here.
