USCG Survival Craft Exemption for BB Reviewed and Renewed

This exemption was originally issued in 1998 for Bristol Bay vessel and it was reissued and updated in October 2022.

A vessel of less than 36 feet with 3 or fewer persons operating within 12 nm from the coast has no requirement to carry a survival-craft.

IF that same vessel caries 4 persons, there is a statutory requirement to carry a survival-craft HOWEVER the vessel can take advantage of the survival-craft exemption if the following conditions exist:

-Operations are limited to those area of Bristol Bay, AK between the Southern-most part of Ugashik Bay and the Western-most part of Togiak Bay and less than 12 nm from the coast.

-Operable VHF-FM radio equipment is tested each morning before getting underway and monitored at all times

-Vessel must comply with all other requirements in 46 CFR Part 28 and successfully pass a Coast Guard Dockside Safety Examination & receive a Coast Guard Fishing Vessel Safety (CFVS) Decal every 2 years

-Exemption is valid only between June 1st and August 31st

-Applies only when there are 4 or fewer persons on board. A vessel with more than 4 persons must have an appropriate survival-craft

-A copy of this exemption letter must be carried on board the vessel at all times [click to download and print]
