Projects & Strategies

In order to use our members' money wisely and maintain a steady course, the board of the BB-RSDA developed a strategic plan that acts as the keel for this organization. You can download a copy of the plan anytime, but the table below outlines the key strategies - along with specific areas of focus within those strategies - that guide all of our budgeting, grant-making, grant-seeking and project activities.

For a much more detailed look at how we translate these strategies into real-world projects, please have a look at our 2011 Project Report.

Strategies Areas of Focus

Improve Quality & Value

Improved quality of finished product begins at harvesting, and continues through to the consumer. Combining increased levels of chilling with improved handling practices will lead to greater demand and higher prices.

     Chilling

  • Monitor economic benefits and costs of chilling fish during harvest
  • Track existing chilling practices in the Bay
  • Support or initiate efforts to extend and improve the chilling of fish, starting at the point of harvest and continuing to the point of sale

     Handling Practices

  • Research, identify and promote handling practices that are effective and practical
  • Encourage increased adoption and use of good handling practices by an increasing number of fishermen

Support Research

Promote research in various economic and biological aspects of the Bristol Bay salmon fishery that may lead to reduced foregone harvest and/or increased revenues for fishermen.

  • Improve the accuracy of pre-season and in-season forecasts
  • Investigate potential environmental and economic impacts of commercial fishing on the Bristol Bay region
  • Investigate potential environmental and economic impacts of non-fishing activities on the Bristol Bay fishery - and identify and support programs to mitigate identified negative impacts
  • Design best-quality practices specifically suitable for Bristol Bay stakeholders

Marketing & Promotion

In cooperation with others, promote Bristol Bay salmon with trade and consumers.

  • Develop and implement a long-term marketing plan for the region's seafood products that emphasizes high quality product and resource sustainability
  • Assess potential for collaboration with other seafood marketing programs to increase impact
  • Demonstrate, wherever possible, that higher quality product returns a higher price to fishermen

Maintain Sustainability of the Fishery

Promote activities and outcomes that assure the continuation of a biologically and economically healthy and productive commercial fishery.

  • Seek the highest level of harvest value consistent with biologically healthy salmon runs
  • Whenever practical, work with processors, government managers and others to jointly develop activities that support this goal
  • Encourage young adults to enter the fishery
  • Seek protection of habitat needed for diverse and abundant salmon populations
  • Combine our support with that of others to raise awareness and demand for Bristol Bay salmon

Strengthen the Organization

Continuously work to strengthen the organizational foundation of the BB-RSDA. Build and maintain a strong sustainable administrative base for the Association.

  • Continuously strengthen communications between the Association and its members
  • Improve board effectiveness through ongoing board education and training
  • Seek external funding to support the activities and aims of the Association
  • Maintain strong financial management
